"I remember my mother as a beautiful, tall, strong woman, who lived fast, as if she knew that her life wouldn’t last as long as it should. She was 32 when she died and I am 32 now. Often, I try to imagine her in her daily routine and once again she comes across as a very intense person; everything she was and did seemed to be magnified. Apparently, my mother was a ‘clean freak’ and there were times when her power? was even too strong for herself to handle.

This happened for instance when my mother came back from the hospital after giving birth to my brother. She got so upset about the fact that the house hadn’t been vacuum-cleaned for a couple of days, that she stopped lactating. My father rushed to the local pharmacy in the middle of the night to buy a formula for the newborn baby. Typically, the first thing on the family agenda the next morning was cleaning the house, which, except for three breadcrumbs on the kitchen floor, wasn’t dirty at all. After a couple of days, my mother started lactating again and life went on as usual. I realize now what it meant to her at that time: there was a new child in the family, there were new responsibilities waiting her, and she had to get back control over her own life.

My brother grew up to become a strong and healthy man; he is a professional water polo player now. We feel strongly about each other. Even though we live in different countries, we are still trying to solve the mysteries surrounding our mother when we are together and we often wonder, would she ever stop cleaning? Our father would laugh at that question, but out of the corner of his eye he would glimpse at the living-room carpet, looking for crumbs, as if she could appear any moment to let us know: it’s all under control, I’m here…"
